The BBC television news covered hundreds of campaigners who marched with their beagles to B&K Universal’s animal breeding site on 16th August. Spokesperson for the campaigners Oppose B&K Universal, Alex Irving, gave interviews highlighting the fact that science now understands how and why beagles – and other animals – fail as predictive models for humans, both in drug testing and disease research. We are supporting the BBC’s focus on campaigners’ call for properly moderated public scientific debates:
It’s a sign of the times when a director of a Beagle breeding unit (B&K Universal) has to take his second planning appeal – refused twice by East Riding Council – to the Government, in order to secure permission to breed Beagles for laboratory experiments, falsely claimed able to ‘predict’ the responses of human patients.
No one wants this Beagle unit, not even East Riding Council!! Current science now proves why animals will never be able to predict the responses of human patients. At least twenty papers have been accepted by peer reviewed science journals highlighting this position, and the Editor in Chief at the British Medical Journal further agrees in her Editors choice, June 2014, titled How Predictive and Productive is Animal Research? This article concluded by quoting from the paper it cited:
“If research conducted on animals continues to be unable to reasonably predict what can be expected in humans, the public’s continuing endorsement and funding of preclinical animal research seems misplaced”.
The Secretary of State for local communities has bowed to pressure from one community only – animal experimentation lobbyists – and overturned a wise decision to now allow an expansion which unequivocally fails human patients.
We admire the locals in Grimston, Hull, who have fought this expansion for 5 years and who will continue to fight it. FLOE gave an important interview for the BBC on the day of the decision, calling for B&K Universal to submit a scientist for a thorough medical debate hearing with our experts. Please listen below. So Gina, Alex and Debbie have built a giant dog which has, this week, visited the stars at Hollyoaks; walked across the Humber Bridge; visited Manchester United and K9 at Doctor Who; appeared on BBC TV news and radio and is going places!!!

Well, last month our campaign hit a new milestone! On May 11th, Doctor Ray Greek testified at the EU parliament hearing, against the testing of human medicines and disease research on animals and he did a great job! He explained that disease research and the testing of medicines on animals is in fact preventing new human medicines from being discovered. This is a big milestone in our campaign because the next stage is to hold a moderated, scientific debate, which is what we have been wanting for a long time.
This is really exciting for us, knowing that we are one step closer to our goal. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support and interest in this campaign and for taking the time to read up and educate yourselves on this very important issue, that affects so many of us and is holding back the progress of new cures and treatments for many life-changing and life threatening illnesses. Over a million EU citizens have created a remarkable European Citizens Initiative (ECI) – only the third of its kind – which this time secured a Parliamentary medical science hearing on Monday 11th May, at the EU Parliament.
The EU Commission engaged medical expert Dr Ray Greek to testify against the use of laboratory animal models, falsely claimed able to ‘predict’ the responses of human patients. Dr Greek is president of our Board Americans and Europeans for Medical Advancement (AFMA/EFMA) which leads this scientific understanding.
Andre Menache MRCVS is the UK representative for the ECI and also delivered a highly focused presentation.

You will hear in the presentation that the ECI recognizes that scientific positions expressed by both sides can be regarded as ‘claims’ until proven true or false. The ECI concluded that their next step must, therefore, be a call for a thorough public medical debate hearing, which can enable scientific scrutiny at the most detailed level by independent scientific experts who are qualified to assess which side is correct. This call for properly moderated, public scientific debate is supported by 83 members of the last UK Parliament and the debate conditions have been endorsed as “well set out and fair” by Britain’s foremost human rights defence barrister Michael Mansfield QC.

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection – BUAV – is conducting a misleading campaign about the amount of funding allocated to lab animal models in medical research experiments, falsely claimed able to ‘benefit human health’. This is a high profile election campaign and we are having to address it via the #VoteCrueltyFree twitter page. We have written to the BUAV today, asking them to help us quickly! It has been an incredible few days, with 83 members of Parliament now signing EDM 22 and 263, many of them brand new including the courageous Tom Watson MP – a key member in the campaign which shed light on corruption at Rupert Murdoch’s News International – Ian Davidson MP, Michael Meacher MP, David Ward MP, Valerie Vaz MP and Martin Caton MP, who also supported the EDM’s text in its previous Parliamentary session. We have received instructions to include Pete Wishart MP on the EDM; he has signed it but Parliament closed for the General Election before his name could appear publicly on the EDM’s page.

As founder of this organisation, and a patient with multiple sclerosis, I am constantly reminded of the alarming lack possessed by laboratory rats, for guiding scientists who seek effective treatments – and indeed a cure – for MS. Rats do not suffer from MS, but still scientists obtain very precious research funds to try and artificially induce MS symptoms (not) – wobbly, shaking rats who do not have MS – in what they describe as the EAE rat model of this very damaging, human specific illness. MPs have signed the EDMs to hold the continued funding of such misleading animal models to thorough scientific account.
Medical research funds must be channeled solely towards human-based methods, which actually stand a chance of helping shed light for today’s patients. In 2015, human-based methods are incredibly sophisticated and include gene based medicine described in the radio interview with Dr Ray Greek, here.
